Jean Michel Comte (b. 1975, Nice) lives and works in Geneva, Switzerland. He began his artistic training in 1994 at Villa Thiole in Nice, before continuing his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts de Toulon from 1996 to 2000. He subsequently completed a three-year programme at HEAD–Genève in the atelier of Peter Roesch.

Jean Michel Comte’s work is an authentic reflection of his personality. Through black areas, obsessive scribbling, and layered textures, the artworks invite total immersion in raw expressiveness. Under his black ink pen, layers of superimposed text written in an intentionally illegible manner communicate deeply personal thoughts that he cannot express aloud. This indecipherable text symbolizes the erasure and preservation of memories and emotions, creating a tension between the desire to communicate and the urge to keep certain things hidden.

His recent 2026 collection explores a series of works built through the repetition of lines and marks. Through the accumulation and obsession of line work, the drawings build a visual density that evoke mental landscapes constructed line by line. The tension between light and dark echoes the existential relationship between control, loss, and persistence. Through this process, Comte transforms drawing into an intimate act of exploration, where gesture, memory, and emotion converge to form an organized chaos that reflects the complexity of inner experience.
